Newport Polo welcomed one of its most historic rivals back to Glen Farm on Saturday, August 15, as Atria Senior Living proudly presented Newport vs. New York during the 150th Diamond Jubilee season of the Newport International Polo Series, presented by Turkish Airlines and in partnership with Aston Martin Boston.
The rivalry between these two storied polo capitals traces back to the beginnings of the sport in America, when New Yorkers summering in Newport helped establish America’s First Polo Club. This year, Newport was determined to reclaim the upper hand—and the home team delivered a commanding performance before an enthusiastic crowd.
Representing Newport in red were Jair Zenteno at #1, Tim Day at #2, Caleb Bryden at #3 and Dave Bullis at #4. Wearing green for New York were Doug Anderson at #1, Jacob Heyka at #2, Hunter Jelsch at #3 and Will Dencker at #4.
Zenteno placed Newport on the board with the opening goal of the match, but Jelsch quickly responded for New York to level the score. Bryden then broke the tie before the horn, giving Newport a 2–1 advantage at the end of the first chukker.
Newport seized control in the second period as Zenteno struck twice in succession, completing a hat trick and extending the home team’s lead. Bryden followed with his second goal of the afternoon, closing the chukker with Newport firmly ahead, 5–1.
Bryden continued Newport’s offensive surge in the third chukker, finding the goal twice more to bring his personal tally to four and send Newport into halftime with a commanding 7–1 lead.
Neither side managed to break through during the fourth or fifth chukkers, leaving the score unchanged as the match entered its final period. Bryden ended the scoring drought in the sixth with his fifth goal of the contest, giving Newport an 8–1 advantage. Heyka answered with New York’s second goal, but Newport’s early lead proved insurmountable. The final horn confirmed a decisive 8–2 victory for the home team.
Beyond the field, guests went all in on the Monopoly match theme, transforming their secured real estate around the grounds with creative fashion and tailgate décor for the Stella Artois Best in Show. Fans also tested their luck at the Foxwoods Resort Casino gaming booth, while special guests of Turkish Airlines enjoyed the match from the TD Pavilion.
Match-day flavors were plentiful, with Amano Pizza & Gelato, Hometown Poke, Brie & Honey, Newport Chowder Company, Sweet B’s Donuts, Java Jai Coffee and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream serving guests throughout the afternoon. At Dillon’s Patio Bar, the Monopoly-inspired Drink of the Match—the Luxury Tax Fizz—added a sparkling touch to the day’s festivities.
A lucky fan from Attleboro, Massachusetts, won the weekly door prize from Veuve Clicquot and earned automatic entry into the Turkish Airlines Grand Prize Drawing for two round-trip Business Class tickets to any destination in the airline’s global network.
