Riders of the Eternal Blue Sky: Mongolia Claims a Thrilling Opening Day Victory at Newport Polo

Beneath the vast summer skies of Newport, the thunder of hooves carried a new story onto the polo grounds on June 6, as Newport Polo launched its 35th season in partnership with Aston Martin Boston and presented by Turkish Airlines. The occasion marked a milestone in club history: Mongolia’s debut as the 39th rival nation represented in the Newport International Polo Series.

For one afternoon, the grounds were transformed into a vibrant outpost along the ancient Silk Road. Flowing fabrics, nomadic motifs, and bohemian finery turned the venue into a festive encampment worthy of the great steppe. Guests embraced the Silk Road Boho theme with enthusiasm, creating a colorful caravan atmosphere that set the tone for an unforgettable Opening Day.

As temperatures climbed toward the 90s across much of southern New England, Newport’s famed ocean breezes swept across the polo grounds, tempering the sunshine with a refreshing coastal coolness known only to those that came to spend the June afternoon beside the sea – several thousand spectators, alongside many of Newport Polo’s 2026 sponsors and partners, gathered on the historic grounds to witness Mongolia’s inaugural appearance in the Polo Series, creating an atmosphere equal parts sporting spectacle, social occasion, and international celebration.

The celebration began well before the first throw-in. Frank Casale, Regional Vice President of TD Bank, presided over the ceremonial ribbon-cutting of Newport Polo’s newly expanded TD Pavilion, officially opening a new chapter in the club’s hospitality experience. Mongolian players, dignitaries, and supporters gathered beneath the pavilion to raise Dillon’s cocktails in tribute to the historic occasion, offering a toast to friendship, sport, and international exchange.

Between chukkers, spectators wandered a lively bazaar of specialty vendors, including Cocoa & Co Portrait Photography, Simply Chicky, and the Newport Polo Pro Shop. A feast worthy of a khan’s encampment awaited hungry guests, from Brie & Honey’s artisanal charcuterie and Newport Chowder Company’s coastal classics to Little Fish’s tacos and ceviche, Fyr Grill’s sizzling barbecue, Sweet B’s Donuts, Berry Sweets, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and more. At the Pavilion and Dillon’s Patio Bar, guests sampled the signature cocktail of the day, the Mongolian Tea, while Dillon’s introduced refreshing canned gin cocktails to eager patrons.

Representing Mongolia were Kristina-Alegra Giercke (#1), Rentsensharav Oldokh (#2), Palam Battumur (#3), and D’Artagnan Giercke (#4). Team USA answered with Anna Dwyer (#1), Sam Clemens (#2), Dan Keating (#3), and Rory Torrey (#4).

Opening ceremonies reflected the significance of the occasion. As the Mongolian National Anthem echoed across the grounds, Gadsaa Tserendorj of the Mongolian delegation raised the national flag for the first time, to be raised at all future matches. John R. Harrison, Regional Director of Sales at Hammetts Hotel, performed the honorary coin toss, setting the stage for what would become one of the most dramatic international contests in recent memory.

From the opening charge, the match unfolded with the speed and unpredictability of a cavalry raid across the steppe. Team USA struck first, with Rory Torrey finding the goal twice in quick succession during the opening chukker. Yet the visitors proved they had not crossed half the globe merely to admire the scenery. Oldokh and Battumur answered swiftly, bringing Mongolia level before the first horn.

The second chukker saw Keating and Clemens restore America’s advantage, but momentum began to shift as Mongolia settled into rhythm. Battumur and Giercke found the posts in the third, while Clemens responded for the home side. Then, with the crowd leaning forward in anticipation, Oldokh unleashed another scoring run that sent a wave of cheers through the grandstands and left the score tied 5-5 at halftime.

Fans streamed onto the field for the traditional divot stomp, and spectators mingled with Team Mongolia during a spirited on-field interview, learning more about the players and their homeland while enjoying one of Newport Polo’s most beloved traditions.

The second half delivered even greater drama. Giercke struck early in the fourth chukker, followed by another precise finish from Oldokh. Battumur extended Mongolia’s advantage in the fifth before Anna Dwyer answered for Team USA, keeping hopes alive heading into the final period.

Then came the charge. Sam Clemens mounted a determined rally, scoring back-to-back goals in the sixth chukker to erase the deficit and send the contest into Sudden Death overtime. With the score deadlocked at 8-8, tension swept across the grounds as players assembled at midfield for one final throw-in.

Moments later, the match reached its dramatic conclusion. Following a rapid exchange of passes, Mongolia’s Rentsensharav Oldokh broke free, carrying the ball over the back line to secure a thrilling 9-8 victory. The crowd erupted in applause as Mongolia claimed victory in its Newport debut, capping one of the most exciting Opening Day finishes in club history.

During the match, the Stella Artois Best in Show competition crowned a standout guest whose interpretation of the Silk Road Boho theme perfectly captured the day’s adventurous spirit. One fortunate attendee departed with a magnum of Veuve Clicquot and entry into Turkish Airlines’ season-ending Grand Prize travel giveaway.

In the post-match presentation, John Battaglino, Co-Founder of Rising Tide Travel and curator of Newport Polo’s Jubilee World Tour, awarded commemorative Jubilee medallions and presented the USA vs. Mongolia Liberty Bowl to the victorious visitors. The ceremony marked the beginning of what promises to become a captivating international rivalry for years to come. Team Mongolia also selected Ophelia, owned by Newport Polo, as Best Playing Pony.

From the festive atmosphere surrounding the grounds to the dramatic contest unfolding at its center, Opening Day showcased everything that has made Newport Polo a cherished summer tradition for thirty-five seasons. The spirit of the Silk Road arrived in Newport with all the color, pageantry, and adventure one might expect from the legendary trade route itself. And as spectators departed beneath the golden evening sky, one thing was certain: Mongolia’s first ride into Newport had become the stuff of legend.
