USA vs. Australia Match Report

Last Saturday, Newport Polo welcomed back one of its most daunting rivalries as USA took on undefeated Australia in a high-octane match dubbed the match of the year, that had fans on the edge of their seats. Adding to the excitement, the afternoon carried a Billabong Barbie theme, blending rugged Outback charm with sideline sophistication. The grounds came alive with Australian-cowboy inspired hats, boots, breezy sundresses, earthy tones, and rustic décor transforming the Polo Grounds into a slice of Down Under. Guests embraced the playful theme with creativity and flair, setting the perfect stage for the international clash.

The pregame festivities were just as vibrant as the match itself. Specialty apparel from Simply Chicky and the Newport Polo Pro Shop gave fans plenty to browse between chukkers, while a mouthwatering lineup of food trucks kept appetites satisfied. From Brie & Honey’s artisanal charcuterie and Newport Chowder Company’s seaside favorites to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Fyr Grill’s sizzling barbie, La Costa’s fresh bites, and Amano Pizza’s wood-fired perfection, there was no shortage of flavor. Over at the Pavilion and Dillon’s Patio Bar, guests sipped on the signature drinks of the day – the Aussie-gria – while Loyal 9 poured samples of refreshing elixirs. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Newport Kites surfed the skies with vibrant colors, creating a striking backdrop for an afternoon of polo and fun.

Playing for Australia were veteran Jeremy Bayard at #1, Nick Wills at #2, Sam Hopkinson, Captain at #3 and mainstay Angus Campbell at #4. USA fielded Cole Kinsella at #1, Dan Keating at #2, Beji Daniels at #3 and Justin Daniels at #4.

Before the action kicked off, Jillian Smith from Veuve Clicquot and Moët Hennessy performed the honorary Coin Toss, officially setting the stage for the international clash. From the opening throw-in, the match proved to be a fast-paced, high-scoring affair. Australia came out strong with two goals from Campbell in the first chukker, but Team USA quickly responded to keep the game close. Both teams traded goals in the second, while Australia pulled ahead briefly in the third, thanks in part to a penalty conversion from Sam Hopkins. Team USA fired back with scoring contributions from Dan Keating, Benjie Daniels, and Justin Daniels, bringing the crowd to its feet as the halftime score dead even, 7-7. Fans celebrated with the traditional divot stomp, raised their glasses to Dillon’s cocktails, and even joined William for a lively on-field chat with members of Team Australia, adding to the festive halftime tradition.

The second half began with renewed intensity. In the fourth chukker, Cole Kinsella struck early for Team USA tipping the lead to USA while the defense locked down Australia, holding them scoreless. The lead changed 3 times in the 5th period as scoring reached double digits. As the match entered the decisive sixth chukker, anticipation buzzed through the stands, as the riveting action brought spectators to their feet. With heightened suspense in the tight contest that seemed to lean in Australia’s favor, no one expected USA to deliver their most dominant performance of the day—five goals, with each player adding their mark to the scoreboard. Their teamwork and precision overwhelmed the Aussies, who were limited to just one goal from Hopkins in the final stretch. When the horn sounded, Team USA secured a thrilling 14–11 victory, sending the crowd into cheers and applause for one of the season’s most exciting matches.

The celebration extended beyond the scoreboard. The Stella Artois Best in Show contest crowned another stylish standout who embraced the Billabong Barbie theme with flair, while the door prize winner walked away with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and an entry into the soon-to-be drawn Turkish Airlines’ Grand Prize trip giveaway. The afternoon culminated with Stacie Mills of Vanderbilt International Properties and friends presenting the USA vs. Australia trophy to Team USA, marking the continuation of a historic international rivalry that has delighted Newport Polo fans for decades. The best playing pony was Turca owned by Sergio Curro played by Justin Danials.

From the energy of the match to the creativity on the sidelines, last weekend was a perfect showcase of what makes Newport Polo such a unique summer tradition. The Billabong Barbie theme added playful Outback charm, while the action on the field highlighted the athleticism, strategy, and excitement of the sport. As fans departed under glowing skies, one thing was certain – the spirit of USA vs. Australia lived up to its legacy, delivering another unforgettable Saturday at polo.
