Match recap: USA vs Singapore

Published on

This past weekend, the grounds of Newport Polo were bursting with vibrant energy and lush style as the USA faced off against Team Singapore in an unforgettable international showdown themed Flora & Fauna – a holdover from the previous night’s gala theme. From the colorful attire to the spirited fans and star-studded sidelines, it was a day that captured the essence of Newport Polo’s summer season in full bloom.

The weekend festivities began on a high note with Friday evening’s International Polo Charity Ball, Singapore Swing, held at the fabled Rosecliff mansion. The glamorous black-tie affair raised more than $80,000 for local and international charitable causes, setting a generous and celebratory tone for Saturday’s match. Guests who attended both events brought that same exuberance to the field, dressed in nature-inspired prints, vibrant greens, florals, and feathered accessories for the Flora & Fauna theme.

Match day fans were welcomed with vibrant summer skies, specialty cocktails, and stylish activations. The Drink of the Day, a refreshing Singapore Sling, was served by The Cocktail Guru at Dillon’s Patio Bar, and became an instant crowd favorite. On the west lawn, luxury took center stage with Herb Chambers Exotics displaying a stunning Rolls-Royce Phantom, sleek Bentley Flying Spur sedan and Continental GT Convertible from its showroom and a coral of other Rolls-Royce and Bentley models, stopping spectators in their tracks. Guests also enjoyed playful moments at the Foxwoods Resort Casino booth, which added a lively, interactive element to the match day experience.

Under the watchful eyes of umpires Minnie Keating and Caleb Bryden, the two teams took the field dressed in striking contrast: Team USA in white, composed of Roger Souto, Chris Fragomeni, Dan Keating, and Sam Clemens; and Team Singapore in red, featuring Cory Koh, Imran Jumbhoy, Julian Lancia, and Ameer Jumbhoy. Before the match began, Christine Scott, Marketing Director of Bentley Boston, stepped forward to perform the ceremonial coin toss on behalf of match sponsors Bentley Boston and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars of New England.

From the first throw-in, Singapore made their presence known. They dominated early, with smooth team coordination and relentless offensive pressure, quickly putting goals on the board and leaving USA scoreless after the first chukker. By the end of the second, only Chris Fragomeni had managed to sneak one through for the USA, while Singapore held a commanding 6–1 lead, thanks in part to fast breaks and expert positioning.

But Team USA wasn’t finished. In the third chukker, Roger Souto found his rhythm, delivering two much-needed goals, while Sam Clemens added another, holding the challengers scoreless to bring the tally to 4–6 heading into halftime.

Halftime at Newport Polo is never just a break in play, it’s a cultural experience. Guests took to the field for the traditional divot stomp, sipping cocktails and enjoying the breeze while mingling on the sidelines. The tropical bar, luxury cars, and stylish picnic spreads created a festive atmosphere reminiscent of a Riviera holiday.

As the match resumed, Singapore’s Julian Lancia opened the second half with a quick and confident goal, reaffirming their dominance. But Clemens responded with a brilliant solo goal and later converted a penalty to gain ground within 1 goal of its rival, 7-6. Still, Singapore’s Imran Jumbhoy had other plans. With two more swift goals to USA’s 1, he bolstered the team’s lead despite USA’s valiant efforts 9-7.

In the final chukker, the pace stayed high and the action relentless, and Singapore’s defense held strong. Clemens added one final goal, bringing his tally to four, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the seasoned Singaporean squad. The match ended with a final score of Singapore 12 – USA 8, a hard-fought game that showcased talent on both sides.

Following the match, Christine Scott returned to center field to present the winners’ trophy on behalf of Bentley Boston and Rolls-Royce. Applause filled the air as the Singapore team celebrated their well-earned victory, posing for photos and sharing smiles with fans and fellow players.

The excitement continued well into the evening with the Après Polo Lobster Fest, a beloved annual Newport tradition. Guests enjoyed fresh, buttery lobster served seaside-style, capping off a full day of sport, sun, and celebration.
