Newport vs. Pittsburgh Match Report

Last Saturday, Newport Polo welcomed Team Pittsburgh for an unforgettable match under the lively and spirited theme of City of Champions. Fans came out in full force behind Pittsburgh’s winning streak, proudly embracing the Steel City’s black and yellow attire, Terrible Towels, and nods to the its legendary sports legacy from Stanley Cups to Super Bowl glory. The grounds were buzzing with energy and hometown pride as guests explored sideline attractions and prepared for an exciting evening of polo.

Team Newport fielded a strong lineup with Tim Day at #1, Caleb Bryden at #2, Oscar Monzon at #3, and Minnie Keating at #4. Representing Pittsburgh were Antonio Villamil, Alex Burkland, Juan Villamil, and Justin Powers. The match was officiated by umpires Sam Clemens and Dan Keating. The game kicked off with a strong start from Newport’s Tim Day, who quickly got on the scoreboard, setting a competitive tone early on. Pittsburgh’s Alex Burkland responded with a goal of his own, followed by another from Tim Day as the teams traded early momentum. Pittsburgh’s Antonio Villamil found his rhythm heading into the second chukker, with both he and Alex adding two more goals, putting pressure on Newport. Minnie Keating thrilled the home crowd with a beautiful goal before the half, and Oscar Monzon nailed two successful penalty shots. Pittsburgh’s Justin Powers had a highlight-worthy goal in the third chukker, keeping the visiting team in the lead. At halftime, the scoreboard read 6–5 in favor of Pittsburgh.

During the intermission, spectators enjoyed stomping divots on the field and sipping specialty cocktails at the Patio Bar, where the drink of the match, the Steel City Sangria was a crowd favorite. The second half of the match brought even more action. Oscar Monzon opened the third chukker with another goal, answered quickly by Pittsburgh’s Antonio Villamil. But Newport wasn’t finished. With renewed energy, they dominated the final minutes, scoring two more goals to take the lead. As the clock wound down, Newport emerged victorious with a final score of 9–8, capping off a dramatic comeback and well-fought match.

Adding to the evening’s festivities were vendors including Newport Fine Linens, Simply Chickie, and the Newport Polo Pro Shop, offering guests local shopping and souvenirs. Food options delighted fans of all ages, with refreshments from JavaJai Coffee Co., Ben & Jerry’s, and Newport Chowder Company. The evening concluded with a trophy presentation led by Ed Carlson, Vice President of Foxwoods Resort Casino, to honor the winning team and their hard-fought performance.
