Ireland’s polo tradition began in 1873, and though its pre-war heyday boasted 30 clubs, eight spirited clubs still keep the sport alive today. In the inaugural season of the Newport International Polo Series, Michael Herbst—then President of the All Ireland Polo Association—led the first Irish team onto our fields. After a decade of annual duals, his daughter Siobhán Herbst, came of age and has carried the torch ever since, and once again captains a finely tuned squad in the hotly anticipated USA vs. Ireland clash on Saturday, July 19th at 5PM.
Before the match, join both teams for Dublin After Dark: Whiskey & Lace on July 18th at the Top of Newport with panoramic views of the harbor at sunset.
This annual summer showdown is far more than sport—it’s a celebration of shared heritage, friendship, and rivalry. Will Team USA defend the honor of the stars and stripes, or will Ireland tip the scales in their favor?
Following the match, mingle with the players at Dillon’s Patio Bar, enjoy a complimentary toast courtesy of Goslings and The Cocktail Guru, and feast on decadent New England fare from The Newport Chowder Company. Bring your best green picnic finery and enter the Stella Artois Best in Show for your chance to dazzle.
