The Highland Charge: Team Scotland Returns to the Newport International Polo Series

This Saturday, tradition gallops back since the last decade, as Team Scotland returns to the Newport International Polo Series for a spectacular summer fixture against Team USA. Known for their fearless horsemanship, deep family roots in equestrian sports, and global polo experience, the Scots bring a compelling blend of heritage, grit, and international polish to the field.

Draped in Highland tartan and fueled by centuries of cavalry tradition, Team Scotland is not just here to compete, they’re here to represent the raw elegance and enduring passion of Scottish polo. From windswept family farms and royal hunting grounds to some of the world’s most iconic polo clubs, these players have carved out impressive careers both in the saddle and in life beyond the game.

Their paths have taken them from the misty fields of Cowdray Park to sun-soaked tournaments in California, Texas, Pakistan, Argentina, and Barbados. But no matter where they are in the world, one thing connects them: a relentless love of the game and the unmistakable spirit of Scotland.

As they prepare to face off against Team USA, meet the four riders who will carry the Scottish flag into battle this weekend:

Angus Hamilton
Born into a family steeped in equestrian tradition, Angus was practically raised in the saddle. He began playing polo at just 8 years old in Scotland, nurtured by a deep-rooted love for horses passed down from his grandparents—renowned racehorse trainers. With a passion for retraining thoroughbreds for polo, Angus spent six years playing professionally at the prestigious Cowdray Park Polo Club. Today, he balances a successful career in real estate with competitive polo. Off the field, you’ll likely find Angus on the golf course or indulging in a hearty plate of traditional haggis.

Bertie Alexander

A seasoned horseman and thrill-seeker, Bertie splits his time between Scotland and Pakistan, where he runs a high-octane riding safari company. From leading fast-paced trail rides to organizing freestyle polo and hunting expeditions, his life revolves around the saddle. Bertie plays most of his polo at the historic Lahore Polo Club and regularly competes in adventurous tournaments across northern Pakistan. His rugged style and love for the sport bring an untamed spirit to every match.

Charlie Cadogan
Hailing from a family farm in Scotland, Charlie began playing polo at the age of 9 and quickly climbed the ranks to a 2-goal handicap. His career includes standout performances at premier English clubs like Guards and Cowdray Park, where he’s competed in high-level 12- and 15-goal tournaments. Charlie’s international polo journey has taken him to Argentina, India, Barbados, and across the U.S., including Texas and California. Off the pitch, Charlie lives for adrenaline—embracing everything adventurous with the same intensity he brings to the game.

Izzy Baillie
Izzy discovered polo in the Highlands at age 12 and has been riding with passion and purpose ever since. In 2023, she was part of the winning team in the Polo in Pink tournament in Pakistan, raising awareness for breast cancer. Based at Kirtlington Park, Izzy balances her polo career with a professional role in intellectual property law, representing fine artists. Her elegant yet competitive style and global experience make her a dynamic force on the field.
