A Newport Tradition
The Halftime Divot Stomp

At halftime, spectators are invited onto the field to “tread in”. Much like a seventh-inning stretch, this time-honored tradition known at Newport Polo as the divot stomp offers a chance to stretch your legs — beverage in hand — while helping to repair the pitch by pressing down the turf kicked up during play. The smoother the surface, the faster the ball rolls, allowing the horses to maintain their momentum in the second half. The divot stomp is also a great opportunity to mingle, snap a few photos, or toss a frisbee.
