The September Society

Welcome to Second Summer—the season insiders wait all year for.

A glorious three-day holiday weekend is nearly here, with a fabulous forecast in store—and while Labor Day may be summer’s ceremonial curtain call elsewhere, Newport knows better. September ushers in our coveted Second Summer, when the crowds thin just enough, the light turns golden, and some of the most beautiful days of the year and biggest events are still ahead. The calendar may say September; Newport is having none of it.

The Atlantic is still deliciously warm, the sun still has plenty of staying power, and leisurely beach and pool days remain very much on the agenda. Better yet, those fabulous resort whites, floaty caftans, linen jackets and glamorous summer dresses needn’t retreat to the back of the closet just yet. Second Summer calls for a second showing—preferably while making an entrance at Newport’s toniest tables, from harborfront lunches to lingering dinners under the stars.

And then there’s polo. September afternoons at BD Field are among the season’s loveliest: brilliant skies, long shadows across the field, Champagne still cold and the competition anything but cooled off. This Saturday, USA vs. England launches the holiday weekend in suitably grand fashion, with Bridgerton Bouquets turning the sidelines into an English garden party while two top-calibre squads settle matters rather less delicately on the field.

Best of all, the Diamond Jubilee isn’t finished with us yet. Beyond England, more international rivalry when Switzerland calls, and more celebrations and milestone moments remain before the curtain finally falls on this extraordinary 150th anniversary season. There are still chukkers to play, glasses to raise, outfits to wear and history to make.

So please, don’t pack away summer just yet. Newport’s Second Summer has arrived—and those in the know understand that sometimes the encore is even better than the show.
