A Day in the Emerald Isle – USA vs. Ireland Polo Match Recap

The spirit of Ireland swept through Newport Polo this past Saturday as fans gathered for the thrilling USA vs. Ireland match under the Emerald Isle theme. The grounds were alive with vibrant greens, Irish-inspired decorations, and enthusiastic tailgates—especially at the 35 Decal, which stood out with its all-green setup. Guests embraced the theme, donning shamrock-colored outfits and raising glasses of the “Loyal Irish,” the drink of the match, masterfully mixed by The Cocktail Guru at Dillon’s Patio Bar.

Before the first ball was thrown in, the atmosphere was buzzing. Cocoa & Co Photo, Newport Fine Linens, Simply Chickie, and the Pro Shop drew shoppers and photo-seekers alike, while the pavilion was filled with irresistible aromas from Brie & Honey, Quidneck Oyster, JacAJai Coffee Co., Ben & Jerks, Sweet B Donuts, Wally’s Wiener Truck, and Newport Chowder Company. The evening’s sponsor, Newport Harbor Island Resort, not only hosted the visiting team but added a touch of luxury to the day’s festivities.

The Match Begins

The players rode onto the field to roaring cheers. Team USA, in crisp white jerseys, featured Rodger Souto (1), Dan Kinsella (2), Minnie Keating (3), and Sam Clemens (4). Team Ireland, in classic green, was led by Liam Whelans (1), Siobhan Herbst (2), John Corbett (3), and Nick Murphy (4). Dan Keating and Caleb Bryden took on umpiring duties, while the coin toss was performed by Nicole Rugg and Sammie Cochis from Newport Harbor Island Resort.

The first chukker set the tone for a competitive afternoon, with Minnie Keating scoring for USA, followed by a goal from Rodger Souto. John Corbett answered for Ireland, ending the first chukker at 2–1 USA. The second chukker saw Siobhan Herbst narrow the gap, and by halftime, Ireland held a narrow 4–3 lead after Herbst’s additional goals and another from Roger Souto for the USA.

Halftime Highlights

As tradition dictates, the crowd poured onto the field for the divot stomp, refreshing drinks in hand, as music played and fans mingled, soaking in the festive atmosphere.

A Battle to the End

The second half opened with John Corbett adding to Ireland’s tally, and Liam Whelans pushing them further ahead. But Roger Souto and Sam Clemens weren’t done yet. Clemens, nailing a series of crucial penalty goals, swung momentum back to the USA, giving them a 9–7 lead heading into the final chukker.

With the tension high, Ireland launched a comeback. Two quick goals tied the match, forcing a sudden-death overtime. In a heart-stopping finish, Ireland struck first to capture the USA vs. Ireland Perpetual Cup, first inaugurated in 1992. Champagne corks popped, and Veuve Clicquot rained down in celebration of Ireland’s hard-fought victory.
